How Dad would explain it
Imagine a menu where the burger says nine dollars, and then at the register it is fourteen. Nothing was stolen from you. There was a plate fee, a kitchen fee, and tax. But you still feel like something happened.
That is how most auto repair pricing works. The number you are quoted is the starting point, and the real total shows up at the counter.
Out the door means we skip all of that. The number we say on the phone is the number you pay.
Every week somebody calls and asks what an oil change costs. We say eighty-eight dollars. And then there is a pause, because they are waiting for the catch.
There isn’t one. A full synthetic oil change at Dad’s Auto Repair Shop is $88 out the door. Tax is in it. Shop fees are in it. The filter is in it.
That pause is the whole reason this page exists. People have been trained to expect the quote and the total to be different numbers. Here is exactly what ours covers, and the short list of things that can still move it, so nothing surprises you at the counter.

What “Out the Door” Includes
When we quote you a price, these are already inside it:
- Sales tax. Not added at the register.
- Shop supplies and disposal fees. The line item most shops tack on at the end. Ours is already in the number.
- The parts the job needs. Filter on an oil change, hardware on a brake job.
- The labor to do it.
So when we say $180 per axle for brake pads, you hand us $180.
What It Costs, Plainly
| Service | Out the door |
|---|---|
| Full synthetic oil change (up to 5 qts) | $88 |
| Synthetic blend oil change (up to 5 qts) | $56 |
| Brake pads, per axle | from $180 |
| Pads and rotors, front axle | from $350 |
| Pads and rotors, rear axle | from $400 |
| Scheduled tune-up | from $250 |
| Georgia emissions test | $20 |
| Tire rotation | $30 |
| Labor rate, anything not listed | $95/hour |
You can see the full list any time on our pricing page.
The Four Things That Can Change Your Number
This is the part most shops leave vague, so we will be specific. There are exactly four, and you will hear about all of them before we start work, never after.
Your engine holds more than five quarts. Oil prices cover up to 5 quarts. A bigger engine takes more, at $10 per extra quart on full synthetic. A truck taking seven quarts is $88 plus two quarts. We tell you when you book, not when you pay.
You drive a European luxury car. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Mini, Alfa Romeo, Maserati. Those brake parts genuinely cost more, so front pads are $230 and front pads with rotors are $450. We publish those numbers instead of making you call to find out.
You need it the same day. Same-day service adds $50. Booking a scheduled day instead avoids it entirely, and we will always tell you that option exists.
Your car has an electronic parking brake. Rear pads on those take an extra step, which adds $50. Plenty of newer cars have one. We will know as soon as we see what you drive.
That is the whole list. No fifth surprise.
Why We Price This Way
Honestly? Because of how often people arrive at our counter on Cascade Road already braced for an argument.
Somebody took their car somewhere, was quoted one number, and paid another. By the time they reach us they are suspicious of every shop in Southwest Atlanta, and we do not blame them. The quickest way to prove we are different is not to say “we are honest.” It is to give you one number and then charge you that number.
It also makes our job easier. Nobody at this shop has to explain a fee at the register, because there isn’t one to explain.
How to Compare Us to Anyone Else
If you are calling around Atlanta, this is the question that makes quotes comparable:
“Is that out the door, with tax and shop fees?”
A lot of the time the answer is no, and the number goes up noticeably once everything is counted. That is not necessarily a shop being dishonest. It is just a different way of quoting. But you cannot compare two prices until both of them include everything.
Ask us the same question. The answer will always be yes.
What We Do and Do Not Do
Being straight about price only matters if we are straight about scope too. We are a preventative maintenance shop: oil changes, brakes, scheduled tune-ups, and Georgia emissions testing, plus smaller things like tire rotations, wipers, filters, and fluids.
We do not do engine or transmission repair, air conditioning, alignments, or body work. If that is what your car needs, we will tell you and point you toward somebody who does it, rather than taking a swing at it to keep the ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does out the door really include tax?
Yes. Sales tax and shop fees are already inside every price we quote. The number we say is the number you pay.
How much is a full synthetic oil change?
$88 out the door for up to 5 quarts, filter included. Each extra quart is $10.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Four things can change your total: more than 5 quarts of oil, a European luxury vehicle, same-day service, or an electronic parking brake on a rear pad job. You hear about all of them before we start.
What does $180 per axle mean?
One axle is one end of the car, so $180 covers both front wheels or both rear wheels. We wrote a whole post on what per axle means.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Tell us what you drive and what it is doing, and we will give you a real number before anything starts.
Is the price different if I walk in?
The price is the same. Same-day service adds $50 on jobs we have to fit in immediately, like brakes. Oil changes and emissions tests are walk-in friendly at the normal price.
