How much is an emissions test in Georgia?

The state caps it at $25. Ours is $20. Here's what else you need to know.

How Dad would explain it

Georgia lets testing stations charge up to $25 for an emissions test. Plenty charge the full $25. We charge $20. The test itself takes about 5 minutes, and most people are back on the road in about 10.

You need one every year if you live in one of the 13 metro Atlanta counties, and your tag renewal won’t go through without it. Brand-new cars and cars 25 model years or older are exempt. That’s most of what you need to know.

How much does an emissions test cost in Georgia?

Up to $25. That’s the maximum the state’s Clean Air Force program allows a station to charge, and the station has to post its price on the emissions sign out front. Plenty of places charge the full $25.

At Dad’s, it’s $20 flat. No add-ons, no “processing fee.” You pay $20, you get tested, and the results go to the State of Georgia electronically.

If you fail, your first retest at the same station within 30 days is free. That’s state rules, not a favor, but it’s worth knowing so nobody charges you twice.

How long does an emissions test take?

The test itself takes about 5 minutes. We plug into your car’s onboard computer (the OBD port under the dash on anything 1996 or newer), the machine reads it, and the result goes straight to the state.

Door to door, most people are in and out in about 10 minutes. The rest is pulling in and printing your certificate. No appointment needed.

End of the month gets busy because that’s when a lot of tags come due. Mornings and midweek are the quickest.

Do I need an emissions test in Georgia?

You need one every year if your car is registered in one of these 13 metro Atlanta counties:

Outside those counties, no test is required.

Your tag renews on your birthday, and the state checks for a passing test before it lets the renewal through, online or at the kiosk. You can test any time in the 12 months before your renewal date.

Not sure about your car? Our Georgia emissions checker asks a couple of questions and tells you in about 30 seconds.

Which cars are exempt?

Hybrids with a gas engine still need a test.

What do I need to bring?

Just the car and your driver’s license. We pull your registration straight from the state system, so there’s no paperwork to dig up.

What if my car fails?

The most common reason is a check engine light. In Georgia, an active check engine light is an automatic fail, so if yours is on, it’s worth getting the code read before you pay for a test.

If you do fail, you get the printout showing why, and 30 days to fix it and retest free at the same station. We’ll read the codes and tell you what it means in plain English. Some fixes are simple, like a gas cap, plugs or filters, and we can handle those. Sensor and emissions-system repairs aren’t work we do, and we’ll point you to a specialist who does them every day.
