A failed test means your car needs work before you can renew your tag. Some of that work is ours, some of it isn't — and we'll tell you which.

We'll tell you what actually failed

A failure report names the system, not the part. We read the codes and tell you plainly what's going on, so you're not walking into the next shop guessing.

Some of it we fix — some we don't

We're a maintenance shop. Spark plugs, filters, a loose gas cap — that's our lane. An O2 sensor, an EVAP problem, or a catalytic converter isn't, and we'll tell you that straight instead of taking the job.

We'll point you somewhere good

If it's out of our lane, we'll say who we'd take it to. We'd rather send you to someone who does that work every day than fumble through it and charge you for the education.

The repair waiver exists

If you spend at least $1,176 on qualifying emissions repairs after a failure and it still won't pass, Georgia can issue a repair waiver so you can renew. That figure is for 2026 and changes every year.

Which Georgia counties require an emissions test?

Thirteen metro Atlanta counties: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale. It goes by where the vehicle is registered. Everywhere else in Georgia is exempt.

What model years are exempt in Georgia?

Two groups are exempt. The three most recent model years — for 2026 registrations that's 2024, 2025, and 2026 — and any vehicle 25 model years old or older, which for 2026 means 2001 and older. So testing generally applies to model years 2002 through 2023.

Do diesels, EVs, or motorcycles need testing?

No. Diesel-powered vehicles, fully electric vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles over 8,500 pounds are all exempt. Gas-electric hybrids are not exempt — they still burn gasoline, so they get tested like any other gas car.

How much does an emissions test cost at Dad's?

$20 flat. No appointment needed — just pull up. Most tests take under 10 minutes, and we file the result electronically with the state so it's on your record before you leave.

When do I need to get tested?

Your tag renews on your birthday in Georgia, so your test comes due right around then each year. Any test within 12 months of your renewal date counts — you don't have to wait until the last week.
