Do you need a test?

When Georgia requires a test.

In Atlanta and the surrounding metro counties, you need an emissions test to renew your vehicle registration. Here's how to know if it applies to you.

You live in a covered county

Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Henry, Cherokee, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Paulding, and Rockdale.

It's almost your birthday

In Georgia your tag renews on your birthday — so your test comes due right around then, every year. Many happy returns: this one's $20. Anytime within 12 months of your renewal date counts; just don't be late.

Your car is 3 to 25 years old

Newer than 3 model years? Exempt. Older than 25? Also exempt. Everyone in between needs a test.

Gas-powered vehicle

Diesel and full electric vehicles are exempt. Hybrids still need to be tested if they have a gas engine.

How it works

Quick, certified, and over with.

Emissions testing is one of the simplest things we do. You pull up, we plug into your car's onboard diagnostics, run the test, and send the results to the State of Georgia electronically. Most vehicles pass. Most tests take less than 15 minutes.

If your car passes, you get a printed pass certificate and you're free to renew your tag online or at the DMV. If it fails, we'll explain what tripped the test, what it'll take to fix it, and whether we can help — or whether you should see a specialist.

No appointment needed. Just drive over during business hours. We're at 2270 Cascade Road — easy to reach from anywhere in southwest Atlanta, and a quick exit off I-285 or I-20 if you're coming from farther out. We'll see you when you pull up.

What happens if your car fails the test.

Most failures are easy fixes. The most common reason is a check engine light that's been on, which automatically fails the test. The fix is usually a simple repair (loose gas cap, oxygen sensor, evap line) followed by a retest. Georgia gives you 30 days to retest after a fail, and your first retest at our shop is free if you bring the car back within that window. We'll tell you exactly what's wrong and whether we can fix it or whether you need a specialist.

Questions welcomed

Common questions about emissions testing.

If yours isn't here, just call. We're not going to make you fill out a form for a basic question.

How long does an emissions test take?

Most cars are in and out in under 10 minutes. The actual test takes about 5 minutes — most of the time is just pulling in, getting connected, and printing your certificate. No appointment needed.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Just drive over during business hours and we'll take you right away. If you have a check engine light on or you suspect a failure, you may want to call ahead so we can flag the issue early.

What do I need to bring?

Just your vehicle and your driver's license — that's it. We'll pull your registration info straight from the State of Georgia system. No proof of registration or new address needed.

My check engine light is on. Will my car fail?

Yes — an active check engine light is an automatic emissions failure in Georgia. If your light is on, get it diagnosed and fixed before you come in. We can also handle the diagnostic and repair if you want to do it all in one visit; just call ahead so we can plan the time.

What if my car fails the test?

You have 30 days to fix the issue and retest. Your first retest at Dad's is free within that window. Most failures are simple fixes — a gas cap, an oxygen sensor, an evap line. We'll tell you exactly what failed and what the fix involves.

Which counties require emissions testing in Georgia?

Thirteen metro Atlanta counties: Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Henry, Cherokee, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Paulding, and Rockdale. If you live outside these counties, you don't need a test even if your tag is registered there.

Are any vehicles exempt from emissions testing?

Yes. New vehicles (less than 3 model years old), classic vehicles (more than 25 model years old), full electric vehicles, diesel vehicles, motorcycles, and certain agricultural vehicles are all exempt. Hybrids that have a gas engine still need to be tested.

When's the best time to come in to avoid a wait?

Mornings and mid-week are usually fastest. End-of-month gets busy because that's when most tags are up for renewal. If you're driving in from Adamsville, East Point, or West End, weekday mornings are your best bet — most southwest Atlanta drivers come in on Saturdays, so we run lighter Tuesday through Thursday.

Can I just renew my tag online without a test?

No — if your vehicle is in a covered county and isn't exempt, you must have a current passing emissions certificate before you can renew. The State of Georgia checks automatically when you go to renew online or at the kiosk.
