What does "per axle" mean?

It means one end of the car, both wheels. Here's why brakes are priced that way.

How Dad would explain it

An axle is one end of your car. The front axle is both front wheels. The rear axle is both back wheels. So when a brake price says “$180 per axle,” it means both front wheels for $180, or both rear wheels for $180. Not one wheel.

Brakes get priced that way because you never do just one side. Both wheels on an axle get new pads at the same time so the car stops straight.

What does “per axle” mean?

Per axle means per end of the car: two wheels, left and right. Most cars have two axles, front and rear. So:

When you see “brake pads, $180 per axle,” that price covers both wheels on one end. Doing all four wheels means two axles.

Why are brakes priced per axle?

Because brake work is always done in pairs across an axle. If you put new pads on the left front and left the worn ones on the right front, one side would grip harder than the other. The car would pull toward the new side every time you braked. That’s not a small annoyance; it’s a safety problem.

So pads get replaced on both wheels of an axle together, every time. Pricing per axle just matches how the work is actually done.

It’s also why a box of brake pads usually holds four pads: two for each wheel on one axle. More on that in how many brake pads a car has.

Do I need to do both axles at once?

Usually not. Front brakes do most of the stopping, so front pads often wear out about twice as fast as rears. It’s common to need fronts while the rears still have plenty left.

We measure all four wheels and show you the numbers. If only the front axle needs pads, you pay for one axle. If the rears have life left, we’ll tell you to leave them alone.

What does “per axle” cost at Dad’s?

All prices are out the door, tax and shop fees included:

JobPrice
Brake pads, front axlefrom $180
Brake pads, rear axlefrom $180
Pads + rotors, front axlefrom $350
Pads + rotors, rear axlefrom $400

A few things add to the rear price: $50 if the car has an electronic parking brake, and $50 for same-day service on any axle. European luxury cars (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and similar) have their own firm prices: pads $230 front and $280 rear, pads and rotors $450 front and $500 rear.

The full list is on our pricing page, and here’s what goes into a brake job at Dad’s.

What about “per wheel” or “per rotor” prices?

Some shops quote per wheel or per rotor to make the number look smaller. If a quote says “$90 per wheel,” that’s $180 for the axle. Always ask whether a brake price is per wheel or per axle, and whether it’s out the door. Two quotes can look very different and be the same job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does per axle mean on a brake quote?

It means one end of the car, both wheels. A front-axle brake job covers both front wheels, and a rear-axle job covers both rear wheels.

How many wheels are on one axle?

Two on a normal car: one on the left and one on the right. Most cars have two axles, front and rear, for four wheels total.

Is $180 per axle for all four wheels?

No. $180 per axle covers both wheels on one end of the car. All four wheels means two axles, front and rear.

Can I replace brake pads on just one wheel?

No. Pads are always replaced on both wheels of an axle together, so both sides grip the same and the car stops straight.
